Hereford excitement abounded from
the Yards to the Hill at the National Western Stock Show, Jan.
14-17. The Hereford breed laid claim to the largest show in
Denver with 640 head of cattle exhibited throughout the four-day
event.
CRR About Time 743, owned by
Hoffman Herefords, McArthur, Calif., and partners Pelton Polled
Herefords, Halliday, N.D.; Topp Herefords, Grace City, N.D.; and
Coyote Ridge Ranch, LaSalle, Colo., captured the coveted supreme
champion trophy after winning the grand champion polled bull
title. The THM Durango 4037 son posted an impressive set of
expected progeny differences (EPDs) on show day including birth
weight (BW) 2.8; weaning weight (WW) 50; yearling weight (YW)
79; milk (MM) 19; and milk and growth (M&G) 44.
About Time weighed 2,100 lb. and
calculated a weight per day of age (WDA) of 3.04 lb.
Colyer Herefords, Bruneau, Idaho, dominated the horned show,
exhibiting national grand and reserve grand champion bulls. C
146 Domino 8172 ET by DM BR L1 Domino 146 was slapped champion
spring calf and overall champion followed by C Reno 6142 ET who
is co-owned with Aaron Wilbourn, Tulare, Calif. The grand
champion bull had EPDs of BW 3.7; WW 54: YW 86; MM 23; and M&G
50. The spring calf weighed 1,150 lb. and had a WDA of 3.57.
Reno posted EPDs of BW 4.0; WW 50; YW 86; MM 20 and M&G 45. He
weighed 2,370 lb. and had a WDA of 2.24 lb.
Winning the polled open female
show was Kari Brumley, Orovada, Nev., with BF Flirtatious 713T
by BR Moler ET, just six months after being named the champion
polled heifer at the 2008 Junior National Hereford Expo. The
intermediate champion heifer showed with EPDs of BW 4.5; WW 53;
YW 92; MM 18; and M&G 45.
In the horned show Colyer
Herefords was awarded the premier breeder honors.
