Beefmaster Blitz
“The Beefmaster breed boasts ‘6 essentials’ including fertility, milking ability, weight, conformation, hardiness and disposition.”
By Kindra Gordon
If you are looking for a collection of the best Beefmaster genetics in the West, they’ll be offered at the annual Western States Futurity & Select Sale hosted by Beefmaster breeders in Fallon, NV, on March 29.

More than 90 Beefmaster bulls and 23 females will go through the sale ring. They are consigned by Beefmaster breeders from several Western states and are “geared toward commercial cattlemen,” says Dalton Lowery, current president of the Western States Beefmaster Breeders Association which hosts the annual event.

This is the second year the sale is being held in Fallon, NV, which is a location that is also hoped to make it easy for commercial cattle producers to attend. For the past decade, the Beefmaster sale had been held in Reno, but parking issues and expenses prompted the move to more of a cattle town.

During the sale’s fifteen year history Lowery says that it has been a great experience for Beefmaster buyers and sellers. “This gives us the chance to get together and highlight our breed, and it is well-received by buyers. Many of the western states are represented from Utah, Arizona, Colorado and Wyoming to Oregon and Washington.”

Lowery, who has been raising Beefmaster at his ranch near Fallon, NV, since 1985, adds that the efficiency and hardiness of the Beefmaster cattle is a strong attraction by the commercial cattle sector. “Beefmaster is a hardy breed that will survive in almost any country or climate. Our cattle do well on everything from desert and greasewood flats to irrigated pastures….They do well under adverse conditions.”

Sue Pierson, a past president of the Western States Beefmaster Breeders Association, and her husband John have been raising purebred Beefmaster near Vacaville, CA, since 1989. They are regular consigners to the Western States Sale, and Sue touts the breed for their ability to travel anywhere, their disease resistance, and the extra pounds that they add to any cattle herd.

She calls the Beefmaster Western States Sale a “great opportunity to promote the breed and provide good quality Beefmaster cattle to commercial cattlemen.”

Attend the sale on March 29 to see for yourself. A dinner and dance will be held for Beefmaster enthusiasts the evening prior to the sale on March 28.

Headquarters for the Western States Beefmaster sale are the Stockmen’s Casino and Holiday Inn Express in Fallon, NV. For room reservations call 775-428-2588. For more information about the event contact Dalton Lowery at 775-867-4099.
